Understanding Pool Water Testing and Balance
Why water balance matters
Balanced pool water is the secret to clear, safe, comfortable swimming. It protects swimmers, your pool, and your equipment. Here’s a simple guide to testing and balancing it.
What to test for
- pH: how acidic or alkaline the water is. Aim for around 7.2–7.6 — comfortable for skin and eyes, and lets chlorine work well.
- Chlorine (sanitiser): kills germs and keeps water safe. Keep it within the recommended range.
- Total alkalinity: helps keep pH stable.
- Hardness (and stabiliser): useful to check periodically.
How to test your water
- Test strips: quick and easy — dip and compare colours.
- Liquid test kits: add drops and compare — often more precise.
- Digital testers: easy-to-read numbers.
Whatever you use, test regularly (2–3 times a week, more in heat or heavy use).
Why pH is so important
If pH is too high, chlorine works poorly and water can turn cloudy. Too low, and it can irritate skin and eyes and corrode equipment. Keeping pH in range is the foundation of balance.
How to adjust your water
- pH too high: add a pH reducer.
- pH too low: add a pH increaser.
- Low chlorine: add sanitiser as directed.
Always follow product dosage instructions, add chemicals safely, and re-test after adjusting.
Test more in hot and rainy weather
India’s heat speeds up chlorine loss, and monsoon rain dilutes and unbalances water. Test and adjust more often during these times.
Handle chemicals safely
- Store chemicals in a cool, dry place, away from children.
- Never mix chemicals together.
- Add chemicals to water (not water to chemicals), following instructions.
Balance is a habit
Regular testing and small adjustments keep water clear and safe — far easier than fixing a green pool later.
